October 17, 2016

On Sept. 30, the superintendent of the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System, Nivea Torres, honored Norwich Technical High School by presenting Principal Nikitoula Menounos with the Superintendent’s Award.

Norwich Tech celebrated its overall rating statewide in terms of reading grade equivalence. Torres said Norwich Tech has the “highest and best readers in the state.”

Language Arts Literacy Lab teachers Lorrie Harvey, Sarah Minei and Patricia Luca honored more than 20 students who came to represent the most improved and highest readers in our school. Menounos accepted the plaque from Torres which reads: “This certificate is awarded to recognize Norwich Technical High School for achieving the Superintendent’s Student Reading Growth Challenge 2016.”

In addition, Torres donated two copies of the book titled “I Am Malala” to the library. She encouraged the students to read it and emphasized the author Malala Yousafzai, at age 16, is the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Peter Descoteau will post photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Culinary students Christine White and Aujiana Fletcher served scrumptious cake and beverages which were supplied by Jason Bentley, Scott Fitzgerald and David Awad from the Culinary Department.

Tenth-grade celebrants included: Angela DeWolf, James Moran, Alex Aguiar, Marissa Madera, Landon Moore, Aujiana Fletcher, and Rayshawn Duclona.

Eleventh-graders included: Ken Sager, Tyler Smith, Wendelis Landron, Cody Kersteter, Genesis Tavarez, Mariano Alarcon, Amber Horelick, Taylor Bassett, Kaitlyn Stripling, and Ryan Stollman.

Twelfth-graders included: Ashley Roche, Florengie Fonvil, Manouchka Duperval, Hope Tracy, Alejo Uttley-Rosado and Angel Williams.

In response to Torres’ question of how to become a great reader, students’ reading strategies are:

Marissa Madera, health technology: Try to understand viewpoints, where the characters are coming from.

Mariano Alarcon, pre-electrical engineering and applied electronics:“I look for vocabulary, so I learn new words. I underline main ideas if it is my book.

Angela DeWolf, graphics: I read books that have twists and turns that no one could imagine. I try to be the character and understand how they feel. This helps me in my graphics shop where I create new designs.

Rayshawn Duclona, electrical: A good strategy is to read a book that you like, to read and find books in a similar genre.
